About This Position

F&S Building Innovations is hiring lead carpenters for their residential division. They're a Class A contractor with nearly 50 years in business, over 80 employees, and two divisions — residential (sunrooms, decks, kitchens, baths, additions, gut renovations) and commercial (healthcare renovations, grocery stores, universities). Ranked in the Top 500 by Qualified Remodeler for 20+ years.

As a lead carpenter, you'll run jobs from start to finish — kitchens, baths, decks, sunrooms, additions, and full gut renovations. You'll have your own company truck and phone, work with a helper on a two-man team, and report to a project manager. This role requires someone who can plan their day, solve problems independently, and keep jobs moving without constant direction.

What You'll Do

  • Run residential remodeling projects independently (kitchens, baths, decks, sunrooms, additions, full gut renovations)
  • Plan each day's work and materials — stop on the way home to prep for the next day
  • Lead a two-man team with your helper
  • Problem-solve on the job site — PMs manage 10-15 projects, so you need to troubleshoot and bring solutions, not just problems
  • Complete daily logs in BuilderTrend (photos, who was on site, material deliveries, sub activity, customer conversations)
  • Collaborate with other lead carpenters on larger multi-team projects
  • Maintain professional customer interaction when on site

What We're Looking For

  • Well-rounded general construction knowledge (framing, trim, basic drywall, basic plumbing/electrical)
  • Ability to run a job site independently — plan, execute, problem-solve
  • Good communicator — not one-word answers
  • Team player with a good attitude — arrogance is an automatic no
  • Comfortable with technology (BuilderTrend daily logs, photos, basic tablet/phone use)
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record (must be approved by their insurance)
  • Must pass background check (7-year lookback — theft/larceny, sex offenses, fraud/forgery are hard nos)
  • Drug test required — zero tolerance including medical marijuana (hazardous industry)

Location Requirement

Must live within a 1-hour radius of Roanoke, VA. Jobs occasionally go 2-3 hours out, especially commercial/healthcare. Service area includes Roanoke, Salem, Lynchburg, Smith Mountain Lake, Blacksburg, and case-by-case further.
