About This Position

Jamison Excavating is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator for commercial excavation work. This includes site grading, storm drains, water lines, sewer lines, and mass grading across the region.

Equipment includes excavators, dozers, skid steers, backhoes, and dump trucks. All jobs use GPS/Trimble systems (no traditional lasers). 99% of work is with a crew, not solo.

Work Split:

25% technical thinking / 75% physical operation
50% following instructions / 50% problem solving

50+ hours per week typical — Time and a half on overtime. Year-round work available.

Service Area

Based in Daleville, VA — serves Roanoke Valley, Christiansburg, Blacksburg, Smith Mountain Lake, Lynchburg, and Franklin County.

What You'll Do

Operate excavators, dozers, skid steers, backhoes, and dump trucks
Site grading and mass grading
Install storm drains, water lines, and sewer lines
Use GPS/Trimble systems on every job
Work as part of a crew (99% of work is crew-based)
Follow safety protocols and maintain equipment

What We Offer

$20 - $25/hour + overtime

What We're Looking For

Valid driver's license (CDL preferred but not required — they'll get you one)
Equipment operating experience (excavator, dozer, skid steer, backhoe, or dump truck)
Must pass drug test (zero tolerance policy)
Good attitude and willingness to learn
No excessive job hopping (5+ jobs in 5 years is a red flag)

Ideal Candidate

Age 30-50
Experienced operator willing to learn GPS if they don't know it
Teachable attitude — not a know-it-all
Thick skin for crew environment (mix of serious and joking)

Can't pass drug test (zero tolerance)

Schedule

Start at 7am, 50+ hours/week typical, no weekends on-call.
