About This Position

Superior Fence & Rail of Roanoke is hiring a crew lead to run a fencing crew. They install wood, chain link, vinyl, aluminum, and specialty fencing (Trex, etc.) across the Roanoke area. The owner is a former attorney who runs a tight, respectful operation — no yelling, no demeaning behavior, and they invest in recognizing and rewarding good work.

As crew lead, you're the face of the company on the job site. You'll direct your crew, interact with customers, manage pre-install and post-install walkthroughs, and make sure every fence is built straight, plumb, and to the customer's expectations. This is 70% managing/directing and 30% physical labor — you're the detail person, not the one lugging concrete bags.

Strong bonus structure: $20/day bonus for finishing jobs on time, $25 for every 5-star review, and a $200/month clean-record bonus. A good crew lead can earn $600+ extra per month in bonuses alone.

What You'll Do

  • Direct a crew of 3-4 on daily fence installations (wood, chain link, vinyl, aluminum)
  • Conduct pre-install walkthroughs with customers — confirm every detail of the fence map, spray paint layout, set expectations on gates/grade/gaps
  • Manage crew workflow — delegate efficiently (one person digging, one setting posts, one leveling, one pouring concrete — assembly line style)
  • Ensure posts are plumb and in a straight line — quality control is your primary responsibility
  • Handle customer communication — present options when problems arise (rocky ground, grade changes, gate placement), not in an antagonistic way but as a collaborator
  • Conduct post-install walkthroughs with customer sign-off checklist
  • Complete pick ticket paperwork and time tracking in Bamboo HR
  • Clean trailer and stage materials for the next day
  • Text customer before arriving on site

What We Offer

$25/hour base pay
Daily bonus: $20/day for finishing jobs within time targets (potential $320/month)
5-star review bonus: $25 per review (potential $100/month)
Monthly clean-record bonus: $200/month if no strikes
Total bonus potential: $600+/month on top of base pay
4-day work week (Monday-Thursday, 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM)
Company truck provided
$60/month cell phone stipend
40 hours PTO after 3 months (80 hours in year 2)
Paid holidays (workday holidays)
Overtime available depending on season/workload
Drive time paid
All tools and equipment provided

What We're Looking For

  • Leadership experience — ability to direct a crew without being demeaning
  • Construction experience — must be able to set a plumb post in a straight line (specific fence experience is a plus but not required)
  • Problem-solving mindset — creative solutions, not just "I don't know, call the boss"
  • Strong customer interaction skills — pleasant, a good listener, can talk customers through options when issues arise
  • Self-confidence without arrogance — believe you can figure it out, but ask for help when needed
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record (company trucks)
  • Must pass background check — sex offenses and burglary are hard nos; other charges evaluated case by case
  • Comfortable with basic technology (Bamboo HR time tracking on phone)

Location Requirement

Must be able to commute to Roanoke/Salem area. Most jobs are within 1 hour; occasional jobs up to 1.5 hours out. Drive time is paid.
